Ontario Ironworkers Benefit Plan Changes

Posted on Apr 8, 2020

To support our members through the COVID-19 pandemic, the Board of Trustees of the Ontario Ironworkers Benefit Plan has made some temporary changes to your benefit plan, effective May 1, 2020:

1.    Remove the time limit for using the pay-direct program – Under normal circumstances, the maximum period you can use the pay-direct program to maintain your benefit coverage is 12 consecutive months. For May and June 2020, you may continue to use the pay-direct program even if you have reached that maximum. The Trustees will review this provision each month in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and, if necessary, may further extend the timing.

2.    Freeze the hour-bank balance – Effective May 1 and continuing through June 30, 2020, if your hour-bank balance is 100 hours or more, you will maintain your benefit coverage without the usual deduction of 100 hours per month. As above, the Trustees will review this provision each month and may extend the hour-bank freezing for longer, if needed.

3.    Change the requirements for disability applications due to COVID-19 – We will waive the 7-day waiting period and requirement for a doctor’s note for applications for disability benefits due to COVID-19 related illnesses.

4.    Allow claims for virtual providers – The plan will cover expenses for virtual treatments from psychologists, social workers, psychotherapists and speech therapists, subject to the usual plan limits.

COVID-19 UPDATE

Posted on Mar 24, 2020

Local 736 is writing to you to give you an update on how we are continuing to operate.  We have been and will continue to post regular update on our website and through Facebook but we know you don’t all have access to the web and social media so this is being posted and also mailed.

First, we are obviously concerned for the health and well-being of our members and our families.  Please take care of yourselves and your families and follow the advice of public health including practicing social distancing.

If you need help please reach out to us.  Do not hesitate to call.

As I’m sure you all know by now, please do not go to work if you have returned from travel outside Canada.  Instead, please self-isolate and inform your employer.  Similarly, if you have flu-like symptoms (such as fever, coughing or difficulty breathing) self-isolate and inform your employer.  Obviously, many of you have been laid-off or directed to stay at home by your employers.  Please comply.   We are glad the federal government has been taking steps to make access to EI easier – including waiving the waiting period.  It is a good step that will help our members.  Obviously, far more needs to be done.  However, we will all get through this together by working together and looking out for each other.

I.Our Office Continues to Work but is Closed to Foot Traffic

Our office and training centre are currently closed to in-person member visits.  Please understand that this is a precaution to protect you and others and to ensure that we can continue to provide service.

Our office may be closed to foot traffic but we are not closed.  Our phone lines work and our voicemail is being received and responded to.  Most union business can be conducted by phone or on-line.  Dues payments can be made by on-line payment and our website explains this simple process.

II.Upcoming Local 736 Social Events

Pin Party.  Unfortunately, the Pin Party scheduled for April 25 has been cancelled.  It will be rescheduled when it is safe to do so.  We want to protect each other and especially our older members.

Local 736 Picnic, Labour Day Parade and Golf.  We have not, yet, cancelled these.  We will monitor developments and if we need to reschedule these events, we will post updates.

III.Nominations for Office & Local 736 Governance

As you know, the Local 736 nomination process takes place in May.  We have requested direction from the International on how to proceed with this given the public health advice to avoid large gatherings and we will communicate further once we have direction.

For the present, regular monthly membership meetings are cancelled.

The Executive Board will continue to meet but will now do so by tele-conference the details of which will be provided to all E-Board members.

IV.CWB Expiry Dates and Other Certification Expiries

Given that recertification is difficult to perform right now, we are trying to find out whether extensions will be provided for expiring CWB qualifications and other certifications such as "Working at Heights.”  We are suggesting extensions.  The Province and CWB are aware of our concerns and we will post new information as we receive it.

V.Lay-Off and Sick Leave Protocols and Recall

We are working with our employer partners to enter into agreements protecting our members so that they can be absent from work for Covid-19 related reasons and receive EI and so that they can safely return to work when the risk has passed.  We will post information as it is available.
